GUASHA

Acupuncture is the insertion of thin needles into the body to treat pain and symptoms of disease. It is part of Traditional Chinese Medicine and has been used safely and effectively for 5,000 years, becoming more popular in the Western world in the last 40 years. The US Military now uses acupuncture to treat pain and PTSD. You can also find acupuncture being used for pain, stress, anxiety and to support healing before and after surgery, in many US hospitals.  According to Traditional Chinese Medicine or TCM, there are 12 basic energy channels running through the body that help the blood flow, cells, and nerves function optimaly. When there is a blockage in this energy flow, we have pain, stress, and disease. Acupuncture treats the symptoms of disease by unblocking the flow of energy. From a western medicine perspective acupuncture, increases blood flow, releases hormones like serotonin and dopamine to help ease pain and depression, decreases inflammation, relaxes muscles, calms nerves and can also stimulate nerve function.  Traditional Chinese Medicine looks closely at each individual's signs and symptoms. At your appointment we may look at your tongue and feel your pulse to help determine where there are blockages in your body and ask you a series of questions before we put in your needles. The needles usually stay in for 20-30mins, while you relax.

Guasha is translated as the rubbing or scraping of red marks, out of the body. Guasha tools are usually made from bone, jade, and ceramic. The edge of the tool is used to scrape the skin and muscles. This treatment is most effective for treating neck pain, migraines, sciatic pain, preventing a cold, and also facial rejuvenation. Guasha except when used on the face can be painful. The red marks it produces are removing toxins from the body like cupping, but guasha is able to go even deeper into the muscles. Guasha for facial rejuvenation or for Bell's Palsy treatment is very relaxing and not painful, with the goal being improved blood circulation to the skin and muscles of the face, lifting and smoothing of wrinkles, reduces puffiness and evening out the complexion.

MOXIBUSTION

CUPPING

Cupping has also become very popular over the last few years in the US. It is said to have originated in Traditional Chinese Medicine, but its use can be found throughout history in all cultures around the world. Cupping can help get rid of stubborn pain, muscle tension, improving blood circulation, and range of motion. It is also used to treat coughs, and Bell's Palsy. Depending on the severity of stagnation, the cups may leave a mark that looks like a bruise on the skin. This mark may range from pale pink to dark purple. This is thought to be the removal of stagnation and toxins from the muscles (lactic acid build up). These marks will go after a few days to a week, and drinking lots of water is important to help the toxins leave the body instead of returning to the muscles.

Moxibustion is mugwort combined with other herbs that are burned to warm up various acupuncture points on the body. This is especially good for arthritis pain that is worse in cold, damp, weather, some digestive complaints, menstruation issues, and fertility. Moxa can help boost your immune system and energy level.
